The OGMS developed its services based on the experiences of the correspondent department for Innovation management and Technology Transfer at the former Institute of Microsystem technology and precision engineering at the Vienna University of Technology. At the beginning of the 80ties the department for Innovation management and Technology Transfer was managed and operated in respect to education and research by Univ. Prof. Dr. Helmut Detter. This department collected a lot of expertise until 2004 (emeritus of Prof. Detter) in the following scientific areas where it still has a unique position in research, education and technology transfer:

• Tribology

• Flexible Automation

• Mechatronics

• Microsystem technology

The target focus was SMEs and further lead to the development of special consulting modules like

• Technology analysis, technology management, technology roadshows, systematic engineering and design

• Product development and innovation management

• Precision engineering in mechanical engineering and microsystem technolog

Consequently the OGMS developed to be an industry oriented non-profit organization, mainly focused on SMEs, engaging in comprehensive and sustainable promotion of technological developments and the connected knowhow transfer in the respective technology areas.
